Christmas in New York

For some, the mention of ‘New York’ and ‘Christmas’ evokes memories of Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone 2 running through snow covered streets, exploring a huge toy store, and admiring the festive lights on the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. For others, it’s thoughts of endless shopping sprees or even the famous song, Fairytale of New York, by The Pogues. Whatever you think of when you hear Christmas and New York, there’s no doubt that the city is one of the best in which to celebrate the occasion. If you’re planning a visit this year, you’ll find hotels and self-catering apartments near to all of the big attractions, so you’ll have no excuse not to venture out and join in the festivities! Here are just a few things you could do…

Get your skates on

Grab your friends and family or take your loved one on a special date to one of the city’s beautiful and iconic ice rinks. Those who like their space will love the Rockefeller Center rink; only 150 people are allowed on the ice at any one time so there’s plenty of room to race around and do tricks. Unfortunately that means you may have to queue for a while, but it’s worth it if you’re willing to wait.

It’s featured in so many films and TV shows that it would be a crime not to mention here. The Trump Wollman Rink in Central Park has the loveliest surrounding views and is popular with families and new skaters. This is because it has the largest learn-to-skate program in the company, so experienced skaters should probably steer clear if they want to practice their moves.

In 2003, Will Ferrell entertained and endeared filmgoers with his characterization of Buddy the Elf, and this year the festive comedy takes to the big stage in a Broadway production that’s not to be missed. Follow the story of a man who thinks he’s an elf (he was raised as one at the North Pole, after all!) as he embarks on a search for his identity in New York City. Expect hilarity and havoc as he wanders around famous landmarks like Central Park and the Rockefeller Center dressed as one of Santa’s helpers…!

Mark-et on your calendar

If Christmas markets are your thing, the Columbus Circle Holiday Market certainly won’t disappoint! One hundred designers, craftspeople and food vendors bring a spectacular array of gifts and treats to the streets of New York in this colorful winter fair, located next to Central Park. If you’re looking for that special present, the market is the perfect place to pick up handmade gifts that can’t be bought in the shops. Or, if you’re simply feeling festive, pop along for the atmosphere and keep warm with the delicious selection of hot food and drinks that are available.

Window shop

For something a bit different, head to the world-renowned Macy’s department store to admire its wonderful window display. This year they’re taking the traditional approach with scenes of Christmas traditions through the ages in “The Magic of Christmas.” The colourful spectacle includes story books, candy canes, elves, toys, family celebrations, Christmas trees, presents and more, bringing all the dreams of a child, and an adult, to life!
