All around the world there are remains of amazing ancient structures and cities. Some of them are well preserved and almost intact, while others are just ruins and shows only small part of its previous glory. Petra

Petra is located in southern Jordan, established probably around 300 BCE. Some if its structures are carved in red rocks.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is located in southern Peru. It is believed that it was built in the 15th century as an estate of the Inca emperor. It was discovered in 1911, since then it has been a major tourist destination.

Ephesus

Ephesus is located in today’s Turkey. It was established as a Greek colony in the 10th century BC. There are only remains of a few structures, but even that shows how beautiful Ephesus was in the past.

Pompeii

Pompeii is an ancient Roman city located near modern Naples. Pompeii was destroyed in a volcanic eruption and covered by ash until the 18th century when it was discovered.

Persepolis

Persepolis is located in modern day Iran. In the past it was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire.

Angkor

Angkor is a well-preserved ancient city in today’s Cambodia. In the past it was the capital of the Khmer  Empire.

Tikal

Tikal is a Mayan city in northern Guatemala. Since 1979 it has been a UNESCO world heritage site.

Palmyra

Palmyra is located in central Syria. It was built in an oasis 215km northeast of Damascus
